Maintaining Your Lawn
Colony Irrigation would like to offer you some basic tips towards establishing and maintaining a beautiful lawn. Important factors in maintaining a quality lawn include regular mowing, fertilization, weed control, irrigation, and leaf-raking.
Mowing
Frequent mowing is an important part of lawn maintenance. It is best to remove no more than one third of the length of grass at one mowing. If mowed to short, root growth is slowed. This reduces the lawns tolerance to heat and drought. Weeds are also more likely to invade closely cut lawns.
Recommended mowing heights for lawns
Grass Type Mowing Height (inches)
Kentucky Bluegrass 2 ½ to 3
Tall Fescue 2 to 3
Creeping Red Fescue 2 to 3
Perennial Ryegrass 1 ½ to 2 ½
Bermuda ½ to 1
*most lawns started from sod consist of Kentucky bluegrass, Fescue, and Ryegrass
Higher mowing heights during summer months will reduce stress levels of the grass: at the same time, it will help increase the drought resistance of your lawn.
